Mark Carney's Return to Mayo | Celebrating Heritage, Family and Home
It's not every day that a sitting Prime Minister returns to the village his family once called home. Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife Diana visited County Mayo as part of a special journey to reconnect with the family's ancestral roots in Aughagower, just outside Westport. Members of the Hughes family, alongside representatives from Carraig Donn and Aran Woollen Mills, were honoured to welcome the Prime Minister and mark the occasion with a selection of meaningful gifts celebrating Irish heritage, craftsmanship and home.

The presentation took place at The Grace Hotel, Westport, as part of Prime Minister Carney's two-day visit to Ireland. The visit included engagements with Irish government officials in Dublin before travelling west to County Mayo, where he spent time reconnecting with family roots in the nearby village of Aughagower.

Celebrating Irish Heritage and Family Connections
Representing Carraig Donn and sister company Aran Woollen Mills, members of the Hughes family and the Board of Directors were privileged to present Prime Minister Carney and his wife with gifts that celebrated Ireland's rich heritage, craftsmanship and enduring family connections.
Among the gifts presented were four specially selected Eidin pendants for the Prime Minister's daughters. Featuring designs including the iconic Map of Ireland "Abhaile" pendant, the pieces were chosen to represent home, heritage and the enduring connection between family and place. It is hoped the pendants will serve as lasting reminders of Ireland and the family's Mayo roots for generations to come.
The presentation also included traditional Aran Sweaters from sister company Aran Woollen Mills, Ireland's largest knitwear manufacturer. With more than 60 years of heritage in the Westport region, Aran Woollen Mills continues to celebrate the craftsmanship and traditions that have made Irish knitwear renowned around the world.
Pat Hughes, CEO of Carraig Donn, said "It was a privilege to welcome Prime Minister Carney and his family to Mayo and to present gifts that reflect the rich heritage, craftsmanship and sense of home that mean so much to so many Irish families around the world. It was a very special occasion for everyone involved."

A Special Moment in Mayo
Prime Minister Carney's visit to Mayo came at a significant time, shortly before travelling onwards to attend the G7 Summit. During his time in the county, he visited Aughagower, the village closely connected to his family history, before continuing a packed schedule of engagements across the region.
The presentation at The Grace Hotel provided an opportunity to celebrate not only the Prime Minister's Irish ancestry but also the craftsmanship and heritage that remain at the heart of Irish design and manufacturing today.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ciaran and the team at The Grace Hotel for their exceptional hospitality and for helping make the occasion such a memorable one.
Fáilte ar ais, welcome back Mark Carney.
